Reading to Write

Hello guys! Today’s post is about reading to write. I don’t have a ton to say on this. I had intended to go into this post with loads of information but the more I thought about this the more I realized that it was simple. Today’s post is called Reading to Write. I was going to write about all the reasons that becoming a reader could help you write. But really it all comes down to one phrase.

Find the things that you like about good books and use them in your own.

That’s it. That’s the reason to become a reader when you’re a writer. Let me explain. When you read a book you really liked and someone asks you why you liked it you could probably tell them. “Well the plot was really well developed. The world was unique. The characters had beautiful character arcs. Etc.”

After you’ve found all the parts of books that you like you just need to figure out how to write them. For example, whenever I read a book my favorite part of them is usually how the world is built. I really liked this piece of religion in book A, I really liked the trees in book C, I really liked the magic rules in book F. And so on and so forth.

Once I’ve realized what parts of the book that I like I try to incorporate them into what I do when I create a world. In this way I have developed my writing. Looking back at past writings my world building becomes more complex and built more like a real world the farther along I get. I’m still not up to Brandon Sanderson or Robert Jordon standards but I’m still working on it.

All you have to do is search for simple things like that. But to do this you first have to be a reader. And if you don’t like reading don’t worry about it. Eventually you will find that one book that you really enjoy. I’ve always had books that I didn’t like as much as others but I enjoy reading enough that I can read lots of different stuff and learn from all of them. So get out there and read a new book!

I’m so sorry this post was really short. I hope that next week it will be longer. If you remember next week’s post is favorite books and why. I really need your help! Please send me the title of your favorite book, who its by, and why you liked that particular book. If you aren’t a writer than that’s okay too! Just tell me your favorite book. This might help those of you who don’t enjoy reading as much. I really hope that we can get a lot of answers in. See you next week!
