Okay guys. So this week is ideal writing spaces. I’m going to write a list from my least favorite to my most favorite (…. Biggest favorite…. Favoritest….. whatever). I’m going to rate them from 1 to 10 on the happy space scale. One being the best and two being the least favorite (favoritest). Hope you guys enjoy.
So my least favorite (scoring an 8 on the happy space scale) of all the places that I write would have to be a library. I like them because they’re quiet. But I hate them because they’re quiet. I type really fast and so it makes a lot of noise. I always feel guilty for makes so much noise when I take my computer. And sometimes, if the library is quiet enough, even my pencil on paper sounds too loud. Another reason that I don’t usually write at the library is that I like to eat when I write. But a lot of food either has packaging that makes really loud wrinkling noises or the food is crunchy and loud to eat. Also, some libraries won’t allow food which means a negative from me. But I do enjoy the atmosphere that lots of libraries have. They are nice, calm, and relatively quiet.
My next least favorite writing spot rated a 6 on the happy space scale would have to be any other place outside of my house. I’m not a big fan of leaving my home (ugh, peopling is not my thing) but I do enjoy the natural stimuli. I love the smell of coffee (although I’ve never had any and don’t really plan on it). I smells like burnt toast to me which is a pleasant smell because my Dad would eat burnt toast (whether he liked it that way or forgot it was in the toaster I still don’t know). I also enjoy parks in the spring or the fall. There’s something about being in a park that makes writing nostalgic scenes a little easier. Different places have different feelings to them.
The next writing space scoring in at a marvelous 3 on the happy space scale would have to be anywhere in my house that’s not my bedroom. I love my house. Its old and creaky but has lots of fun memories in it. Also, its not completely silent which I can’t seem to handle when writing sometimes. Quiet sometimes is not good for my writing brain. But the draw back of writing in my house is my family. Boy can they be loud! There’s seven other people living in my house. Sometimes there is to much going on and to many people that want to talk to me and I can’t get a single word down let alone a single chapter. But my house is my house and its still beats outside places on my scale of favorite places.
The best writing space with a 1 on the happy space scale is my room. This is mostly because it is a me controlled environment. I have hand drawn world maps on my walls which make it easier for me to see where my characters are going. I have reference material within an arm’s length of my desk. I have notebooks that I can grab, books that I can reach for when I need a small break. Food in my closet for snacks while writing. My chair is always nice and I have a bed within a couple steps of my desk. I can control what music plays by making my own playlists. I can control what temperature I am by adding jackets or removing them. (Or blankets you know, depends on how much of a ball you want to be.) I have perfect control of my space when in my room. The only thing I can’t control is when people come into my room with a bang. (Looking at you dad. 😉 ).
So there you go. My favorite writing spaces. I don’t think this post was particularly helpful in anyway but it sure was fun to write and I hope it was fun to read. Maybe you can try out new writing spaces and tell me how that goes. I’m thinking that next time I do a suggestion post I’ll give more advanced warning!
Next week I’m going to talk about how I design characters including clothing and personalities. Hopefully next week will be more helpful to all you budding writers out there. Have a fun time and I hope that you continue to write. Good luck in all your writing ventures. I leave you with the writing blessing.
May you write 1,500 words with ease. May your characters be lively and not cardboard. May you need little editing. May your muse visit you as soon as you sit. May the internet not distract you much. May your phone lie dormant while you write.
See you next week!
