Writing Music

Alright. So this weeks blogpost for writers everywhere is writing music. The music you listening to while writing not writing lyrics and composing music.

I know that lots of people don’t like to listen to music while they write because it effects their writing. Personally I really enjoy listening to music while I write. But the thing is I pick the music I listen to while writing in one of three ways. So that’s what this post is about. We’re going to explore, the three ways that I do it and maybe that will help some of your struggling with finding the right music.

1. GENRE

The first thing I usually do it to pick music by genre. There are lots of ways to do this. Before I really wrote on the computer I would create youtube playlists of a certain kind of instrumental song and label them by the emotion they elicited or the genre I felt the song fell under. But then I started mixing the playlists and it got complicated to keep track of. That was till I was scrolling through Pinterest a year ago (a Pinterest: the gold mine for all random ideas) and I found this website.

Its called Sound fuel (I’ll put the link at the bottom so you’ll read the whole article :) ) and it looks like this. ( I like screenshots)

From Soundfuel you can go to the directory and you’ll see playlists like this:

And there are many many more. Total there are 38 playlists to date and they are always adding new ones. WhenI started using it there were around 20 playlists. You can add a request in the comment section and they will work to make that specified playlist for you. When you click on a link to a playlist it looks like this:

It takes you to a youtube playlist that is made for that genre. You can then set it to shuffle and have the epic music of your choice playing in the background as you write your next masterpiece. (Or not a masterpiece if you don’t want to write one).

2. LYRICS

The second way that I do writing music is by the lyrics. Sometimes I will be listening to a song and a section of the song, the whole song, or a single line might remind me of my character or book. This song is then added to a playlist titled after the book it reminds me of. Sometimes I play this playlist when I’m writing. For example, when I was writing my book Battle Lines I listening to Ready, Aim, Fire by Imagine Dragons, Monster by Imagine Dragons and Fly on the Wall by Thousand Foot Krutch. All three of these songs reminded me of my novel or characters. In this way I can find songs that give me ideas for my book and not just emotions for scenes that I already know.

3. WHATEVER I FIND

I have a varied diversified music taste. I have a playlist on my phone that is labeled For Fun and its every single song that I have downloaded on my phone. This playlist consists of 507 songs. These songs vary from The Parting Glass by Celtic woman to Gravity by Sara Bareilles all the way to Amnesia by 5 seconds of summer and Human Race by Three Days Grace. I listen to all the music my friends suggest to me and if I like it, it gets added to the For Listening Fun list. In this way I sometimes just play a background track that has no effect on my writing and this is the playlist I use for it.

So that’s all I have on writing music.
